Requirements

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on an Apple silicon or Intel Mac, with built-in Ethernet or a USB or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter.

Common questions

The menu says “No Ethernet adapter found”

Your Mac has no Ethernet port and no adapter is connected, or the adapter isn’t recognized by macOS. Plug in the adapter and check that it appears in System Settings › Network. Thunderbolt Bridge and Wi-Fi aren’t shown, by design.

“Network Configuration: Invalid — self-assigned address”

The cable is connected but no DHCP server gave your Mac an address, so macOS picked a 169.254 address on its own. Check the cable and the switch or router port, or ask your network administrator. “No router” and “no subnet mask” point to an incomplete manual configuration in Network Settings.

“Internet: Not Reachable” but websites load

Twisted Pair checks the internet over your Ethernet adapter only. If websites load, they may be coming over Wi-Fi. A hotel or guest network that needs you to log in also shows as not reachable until you do.

The wrong adapter is shown

Open Settings and choose the adapter under Ethernet adapter. Automatic picks the adapter carrying your default route, otherwise the first one with a cable plugged in.

Launch at login doesn’t stay on

macOS may ask you to approve it. If Settings says approval is needed, click Open Login Items and allow Twisted Pair.

Where did the AirDrop and pause-connection switches go?

Version 2.0 removed them. Modern AirDrop works differently, and an App Store app can no longer change that setting or turn a network interface off. Use Open AirDrop and Open Network Settings in the menu instead.

Sending us a diagnostic report

Run this in Terminal and paste the output into your email. It lists your adapters, their status, and what the menu shows, and nothing else: "/Applications/Twisted Pair.app/Contents/MacOS/Twisted Pair" --diagnose
